Maile Lei

The maile lei is the traditional Hawaiian wedding lei, created by intertwining two beautiful fragrant maile vines, symbolizing the sacred union of the bride and groom. Maile is used for many of life’s important or sacred events, like blessings and funerals.  The subtle, yet unmistakable scent is unlike any other fragrance. We primarily offer Hilo Maile (as pictured); however, when Hilo Maile is in short supply we may offer maile grown in other South Pacific locations such as Tonga. These South Pacific Maile are thicker than Hilo Maile Leis. If you have a preference, you may use the special instructions section during checkout to let us know.

RELATED INFORMATION
Vanilla-scented maile is a vine-like shrub that grows in the mountain rainforests of Hawaii. The vine bark and leaves are stripped and intertwined and knotted to make the maile lei. It is associated with Laka, the patron spirit of hula (dance), and was commonly used in sacred ceremonies. Today, the maile lei is the traditional lei used in very important ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals.

Absolutely fabulous. I have ordered maile from Hawaii Flower Lei for several graduations on the mainland, and it always arrived fresh, fragrant, beautiful, and on time. The graduates felt the aloha spirit with that unmistakable special-occasion scent.
