The pakalana flower is native to India and China, but it thrives in the Hawaiian Islands. The plant is a member of the Asclepiadaceae or Milkweed family with a slender vine and woolly branches. The heart-like shape flower has five, pointed petals, that resemble a heart. About 0.5 inches in length, the blossoms are greenish-yellow in color and are often at times revealing their typical fluffy seeds.
The pikake flower, or Jasmine flower, was introduced to Hawaii in the 19th century. It was Princess Kaiulani’s favorite flower, the sweet smelling Arabian Jasmine, was so named “pikake” (peacock) because she was fond of both the flower and the bird.
The rosebud was brought to Hawaii in the early 1800s. The rose has been an integral part of lei making in Hawaii ever since, used frequently as accents in both traditional haku leis as well as more contemporary orchid leis. The pink lokelani or cottage rose is the Island of Maui’s official flower – the only non-native plant to be recognized as the official flower of any of the Hawaiian Islands.
