The He’e Berry is used at Christmas time and throughout the year as a long-lasting and colorful lei making material. Unfortunately the shade tree it grows on (schefflera) has become one of the worst weed trees, especially in the moist forest areas of the Islands. The red buds grow in clusters that resemble “arms,” which is the reason they are called “he’e,” the Hawaiian name for octopus.
